On February 1st an historical event took place at the RE: Reloaded panel discussion about Cinema Reloaded. For the first time ever, Cinema Reloaded directors Alexis Dos Santos, Pipilotti Rist and Ho Yuhang were together to speak about their participation in this unique online experiment and the project in general.
The purpose of the gathering was to stoke up debate about future audience participation and crowd-funding, with panelists including Cannes Market chief Jerôme Paillard, Barbara Tonelli from the successful online crowd-funding initiative Touscoprod and Savina Neirotti of the Torino Film Lab. Former Screen International editor and journalist Mike Gubbins chaired the discussion, starting by interviewing the filmmakers about their plans, expectations and opinions about this crowd-based form of film financing and production. Walking on to the stage, Alexis Dos Santos was quick to pull out his pocket camera and film his fellow filmmakers and the audience. Alexis, Pipilotti and Yuhang consider their participation as a matter of finding new ways to open up opportunities for the future of cinema. “Traditionally, in cinema the relationship between artist and the public is very removed, but with Cinema Reloaded, it’s different,’ Pipilotti says. “I expect true interaction, two-way communication. You find the audience, before making the film.” Ho Yuhang agrees on this point: “ Cinema Reloaded brings the audience in.” Jokingly he added: “Now my privacy is invaded, although I’m actually a very private person.”
