The International Film Festival Rotterdam  has been championing innovative and exciting filmmakers and taking their work to new audiences. This new experimental project - Cinema Reloaded – is taking that mission to a new level by using the opportunities offered by the digital age. Cinema Reloaded experiments with new forms of financing, production and distribution for the kind of innovative, artistic and independent film with which Rotterdam has always been associated.

The festival has asked Alexis Dos Santos and Ho Yuhang, two filmmakers with whom it has worked before and which represent the kind of filmmaking it has championed, to participate in Cinema Reloaded. Each project is funded by you; the very loyal and dedicated Rotterdam festival audience and cinema lovers everywhere.
On the Cinema Reloaded website, two short film projects are presented. On the website you can see how much each short film project still requires to meet its minimum budget. By investing in a project, you become a "co-producer" and can therefore access special information, private forums and also the following services:

  • Regular updates by the filmmaker
  • View the premiere of the film in streaming VOD
  • Have your name in the credits if you purchase a minimum of 5 coins (if you became a co-producer before 11 January 2011)
  • Invitation to the theatrical premiere (depending on availability of seats)

You are able to create an online profile on the site and are encouraged to attract more co-producers. If you have any questions, please read our FAQ to  the right.

Do I have to necessarily invest in a project?
No, if you want to have information on a project, you can check out the main details and you can participate in public forums. By investing in a project, you become a "co-producer" and you can access special information, and also the following services:
  • Regular updates by the filmmaker
  • View the premiere of the film in streaming VOD
  • Have your name in the credits if you purchase a minimum of 5 coins (if you became a co-producer before 11 January 2011)
  • Invitation to the theatrical premiere (depending on availability of seats)

As a "co-producer", can I be part of the creative choices made for a project?
No. Co-producers don’t have a say in creative choices, but comments are always much appreciated! Moreover, the filmmakers can invite you to give input.

How long will it take before a project is completed?
That depends on the filmmaker and his project and when the minimum budget for that particular project is reached, but the projects that will eventually go in production will be ready at latest by the 40th editon of the festival in 2011.

Are there any profits/return of investments for me as the co-producer?
No. The "profit" lies in the fact that you made it happen for a filmmaker to realize his dream. And of course, the benefits that are already mentioned!

Can I get refunds?
No, once you completed the transaction and purchased the coins, there is no way to get refunds. If it should happen that the project(s) that you supported are not realized (due to unforeseen conditions) your coins will be automatically allocated to other projects by the festival.

How do I get my name on the end credits?
Simple, by spending 5 coins on one particular project your name will be automatically listed on the credits of that film.

What does the "amount sought" refer to?
The minimum amount of money that is necessary to reach for a proposed film to get into production, which is to be determined between filmmaker and the IFFR per individual project. For the projects envisaged to be finalized before the IFFR 2011, the deadline before the financing threshold must be reached is 31 December 2010.

What happens with my investment if all three or one of the projects fails to reach the minimum budget before the deadline?
The goal is that at the end of this project you and we have made three films possible. However, since it is an experiment and we can’t predict the future, the festival will guarantee that at least one of the projects (the one with the most coins) will be fully financed up to the minimum required budget and produced by way of gap-financing.

How can I spend my coins?
Any way you want, you invest either in 1 project or both projects. And no, there is no limit to the amount of coins that you can acquire, either by buying them or by getting them through our "make a friend a co-producer’-offer" (for every 5 people that you get on board as co-producer you will receive 1 coin for free). You don't have to spend all your coins at once. Coins that you did not attribute will be safely kept in your digital wallet on this site. Another nice thing about our coins is that you can also give them away to a friend as a voucher. Make sure you spend all your coins before 31 December 2010. All coins that are not allocated to a specific project after 31 December 2010 will be allocated to any of the projects by the festival.

How can I be sure my money is being correctly used by the filmmakers?
The festival invited only known and trusted directors for this project and they signed a contract that they are fully committed to their project being made once it goes into production.

Once I donated my coins to a project, do I have the option to change my mind and give to another one?
No.

Where does the optional €2.50 to support Cinema Reloaded in general go to?
We will allocate that amount to the general support of the project. This money is not transferred to a particular project!
